Whether you’re currently trying for a baby, or planning to start soon, it’s a great idea to get your diet in tip-top baby-making shape.
So ditch the junk, the booze and the fags and get munching our top five fertility-boosting foods.
Follow DietPixie’s top five tips and make small, healthy changes that could make a massive improvement to your levels of fertility.
5. Eat organic, eat well, eat fresh
Try and stop as many yucky toxins getting in as possible. Stick to organic, farm assured products and where possible eat seasonally so that you’re not eating aging produce or food that’s been flown hundreds of miles.
Eating organic meat that hasn’t been pumped full of growth hormones and other nasties like antibiotics is better for you, and your potential bundle of joy.
Avoid refined food, like sugary, salty ready meals and fast food. Opt for whole foods and unrefined options like granary bread. Unrefined flour contains 80% more zinc, which is important for sperm production.
4. Avoid alcohol and caffeine, but down water
The devil’s drink and morning after coffees screw with your system, leave you sluggish and are thought to diminish fertility to some degree.
Drinking plenty of water will help to flush excess toxins from your system – but herbal teas and sugar-free cordials are fine too.
3. Get your dose of B vitamins
Vitamin B6 helps to balance your hormone levels and Vitamin B12 helps boost sperm production.
Get your fix of B6 through seeds, nuts, lentils, fish and eggs.
Dose up on good quality meat, seafood, free range eggs and dairy products to pack your diet with B12.
2. Get your precious metals in
Namely zinc, which helps make clever swimmers and is thought to reduce the possibility of miscarriage.
Zinc is a great little booster to your body, helping your immune system and your hormones including oestrogen and progesterone.
You can take zinc supplements, but it’s always better to get your minerals and vitamins within your diet if possible. Go for seeds, nuts, seafood and red meat such as good quality beef.
Vitamin C helps improve sperm quality, as well as the number of sperm. Make sure you both get a good amount of fresh fruit such as strawberries, oranges, raspberries etc but to really get to the 1000mg daily dosage, you may have to resort to capsules.
