Heart disease risk can be detected from toenail clippings Toenails can tell a lot about a person.

For men, it can tell just how much care he takes over personal grooming and general cleaniness.

For women, according to a recent US study, it can tell you how likely they are to suffer from a heart attack.

Cows that eat an organic diet produce healthier milk.A study by Newcastle University has found that organically-reared cows produce healthier milk than the standard-bred variety.

Cattle fed on fresh grass had 60% more good fatty acids than milk from non-organic cows, with the most notable results being found in the summer months.

These good fatty acids are known as CLA9, and consist of conjugated linoleic acids and omega 3.

Big bums are not all bad - they have good fats too.Having a fat bottom could be better for your health, new research suggests.

In news that will come as a huge relief to millions of women (and men) around the world, it seems a certain type of fat that is particularly prevalent around the buttocks can cut the risk of type 2 diabetes.

It’s called ’subcutaneous’ fat – and scientists believe it can actually aid weight loss and regulate your blood sugar levels. How does it do that? Well, it produces adipokines, hormones which can boost your metabolism.

Light exercise such as swimming can improve conditions such as arthritis and diabetes.Recent reports have stated that over half of adults with diabetes in the US have also got arthritis, which has led to the unsurprising conclusion that diabetes patients are less likely to partake in exercise.

It’s the ultimate Catch 22 situation, as diabetes sufferers could well use exercise to improve their condition and general health. Exercise is also know to stop the onset of diabetes, as it can help with weight control.

Half of us have ‘fat genes’

Fat gene

Over 50% of Britain’s population are carriers of a gene that could be making them fat.

Scientists have discovered a section of genetic code that gives its owners an increased chance of being overweight and suffering from related ailments such as diabetes and heart disease.

According to The Telegraph website, the gene is a third more common amongst those of South Asian descent, and leads those carrying it to weigh at least 4.4kg heavier and have a waist that is 2cm larger than non-carriers.

It is well noted that the ‘metabolic syndrome’, which is a cluster of diabetes factors, tends to stem from excess abdominal weight.

Other symptoms include high blood pressure and blood sugar. Not good. However, experts say that you don’t have to completely overhaul your lifestyle in order to see the benefits - just a few small changes can reap massive rewards.

Daytime dozing linked to strokes

April 21st, 2008 09:30

Elderly people who doze during the day are four times more likely to have a stroke than those who don’t, according to a new research.

The study, presented at the recent American Stroke Association in New Orleans, stated those who found it difficult to stay awake during the daytime were at a much higher risk.

Behold, the new Magnificent Seven.

Ok, so they maybe they’re not about to don a cape and save you from a burning building, but they could be what stands between you and an early grave.

Why? Because they are all superfoods, and as most of us don’t have the time to go to the gym every day, they are the easiest way to stay fit and healthy.

Pregnant man, Thomas Beatie, has had the baby

baby, dummy, pacifier, thomas beatie, pregnant man, man baby, man, sex changeAnd if we were a tabloid we’d put man in snarky apostrophes, but we’re just a little bit classier here at DietPixie.

Of course we all know the story. It’s age old. Man meets woman. Falls in love. They decide to have a baby. Man used to be woman until sex change op. Well, partial sex change op. Man still has some of his old womanly bits knocking about. Man carries baby. Goes on Oprah. And now… man has given birth to baby girl.

It’s a beautiful thing.

If only more men gave birth to babies. Maybe then we’d get a bit more bloody understanding about how much it Bloody Hurts. Oh well.

Thomas, 34, was born a lady, but took hormones and had his breasts removed to live as a man. He always hoped to get pregnant one day though, so he kept his female sex organs, telling Oprah it was down to his “human desire” and “right to have my own biological child.”

Some stuffy old squares didn’t agree though, largely the Christian right of America who went flipping apeshit.

His wife Nancy, 45, already has grown-up children and cannot have more biologically after having a hysterectomy.
