A cure for peanut allergies could be available within just five years.
Researchers at Duke University In North Carolina, USA, have claimed in an article recently published in The Lancet they are on the verge of a breakthrough.
They believe that in just a few years they could be able to make millions of sufferers immune to the life-threatening allergy.
Speaking to Fox News, Dr Clifford Bassett, who is the vice chairman of the Public Education Committee of the American Academy of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology, said he was “gratified” a cure was on the horizon.
He said: “Throughout the world, food allergies are doubling. It’s a very serious condition that’s here to stay.”
However, in the meantime, while a cure is not yet available, Bassett said it was important that both adults and children were tested for food allergies.
He said: “We’re trying to take the risk down to zero. Right now, the primary approach is education and awareness.
“Children and adults should be tested for food allergies, especially if there is a medical history of the condition.”
