Cow pee used to cure cancer

Could cow urine really cure cancer? Yes, you read that right – pee from a cow.
Well, local government officials in India certainly think so.
Bureaucrats in the state of Uttarakhand plan to begin stockpiling litres of the stuff in a bid to find alternative ways of fighting against all kinds of diseases, including cancer.
But before you start considering taking your trusty container down to the nearest cow field, just take in mind we are not talking about any kind of cow.
In fact, they are only interested in 26 species of mountain cows.Their pee has unique ingredients that make them stand out from your usual bovine piss, according to specialists in the ancient Indian system of herbal medicines and cosmetics known as Ayurveda.
Ingredients they believe can not only cure cancer, but also liver disease, diabetes, asthma and even haemaerroids.
“Cow urine has the same potential as allopathic medicines to fight disease,” said chemist Rakesh Bahuguna.
Uttarakhand are not the first state to look into the healing properties of the most sacred animal in Hinduism.
The government of Gujarat – one of the three states dominated by Hindu nationalists - has been bottling the stuff for years. They call it “Gift Of The Cow” and you can drink it from a bottle, or take in tablet form.
The idea of using it came from the central Indian headquarters of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), who are the powerful Hindu nationalist ideologues behind the country’s Bharata Janata Party.
Although a lot of doctors in India are sceptical, there is no shortage of advocates in Gujarat and Uttarakhand.
They include 65-year-old Vidhyaben Mehta, who claims drinking cow urine for three years has helped ease the pain of a cancerous tumour on her chest. She has also defied medical predictions that said she would be dead in two years.
Even the Indian Institute of Management has taken note and are looking into developing drugs that contain ‘The Gift of The Cow’.
Professor Anil Gupta, from the Institute, said: “This isn’t just a religious thing. If it’s useful, we should not stop it simply because we think it has religious connections.”
Officials in Uttarakhand are also looking into the possibility of setting up a Cow Science and Technology Institute to research cow urine’s and even cow dung’s healing powers more closely.
