Flame-grilling can give you cancer, says study

Women who like to eat flame-grilled food are more likely to get breast cancer than those who don’t.
That’s according to a new study, which found that ladies who feast on flame-grilled foods more than twice a month were 74% more likely to develop the disease.
Johns Hopkins University’s Dr Kala Visvanathan, speaking at a cancer prevention conference sponsored by the American Association for Cancer Research, said:
“Cooking meat at high temperatures in direct heat over an open flame can lead to the production of cancer-causing chemicals known as heterocyclic amines, or HCAs.”
But 74% higher risk!? That’s a lot. So how did they come up with that?
Well, apparently, by studying the eating patterns of 312 women with breast cancer and 316 women without any kind of cancer.
Okay, so what other patterns did they find?
“We saw similar results for increased meat consumption,” Visvanathan said.
In fact, his team found women who ate more than 64 grams a day had a 43% higher risk of breast cancer than who ate less.
The risk was much greater for women who were considered to have ‘rapid metabolisms’.
But if you really do not want to give up eating flame-grilled meat, the team had some good news.
Apparently, taking an aspirin with your meal will negate the potentially harmful effects! Yum.
