Diet drinks could lead to weight gain, study

Could diet drinks be doing more harm than good?
A new US study certainly thinks so after it found that consuming drinks with the artificial sweetener saccharin may actually lead to more weight gain than the normal sugary alternative.
The Purdue University study compared the effects of feeding rats with diets containing artificial sweeteners and those on sugary diets.
It found that those on the sugar-free option were more likely to over-eat.
ABC News’ medical expert Marie Savard said: “The tastebuds taste sweet, but there’s no calorie load that comes with it.
“There’s a mismatch here. It seems it changes your brain chemistry in some way.
“Anything you put in your mouth, your body has a strong reaction to it. It’s much more than counting calories.
“It seems normally with sweet foods that we rev up our metabolism.”
