Cynthia Nixon says cancer was ‘no big deal’

The Sex and the City redhead, who plays butch solicitor, Miranda Hobbs, has revealed she overcame breast cancer, but it wasn’t that big a brouhaha.
The mum of one discovered she had stage 1 cancer two years ago, she tells Shape magazine. Having watched her mum suffer with – and beat – breast cancer 30 years before, she wasn’t too worried.
The cancer was caught in the early stages, thanks to the regular mammograms the sensible actress had been having every year since she was 35.
“The doctor said the tumour was so small,” says Nixon, now 42. “He wouldn’t have even noticed it except for the fact that it wasn’t there on previous X-rays.
”I’ve learned that if you catch breast cancer early, the chances are overwhelmingly good that you’ll be cured. So my attitude, which very much mirrored my mother’s, was this wasn’t a big deal.”
She was treated with radiation for six weeks and had a lumpectomy. She says:
“I was doing a play and I didn’t want to miss any performances. So the surgeon made special arrangements to do the procedure on a Sunday, when the theatre was dark.”
Anyone else think this sounds a bit ‘braggy’? If we’d been diagnosed with cancer, we’d drop everything. But maybe we’re just a bunch of wimps.
