Caveman diet is the way to lose weight and get a trim waist
May 9th, 2008 at 9:00 by Catherine Wilson
A new study reckons that following one of the oldest diets in the world - that of a caveman - will help you to whittle your waist and get a healthier heart.
Don’t worry - you don’t have to grow a massive beard and wander around with a wooden club, but taking on board some of the cavemen’s dietary habits could be beneficial.
The staple foods of the stone-age diet are berries, nuts, lean meat, fish and vegetables. Convenience foods and bars of Dairy Milk just weren’t invented back then, so we’re afraid you’ll have to cut them out completely.
Banned foods on the caveman or Palaeolithic diet are, unsurprisingly, largely processed or relatively new items, such as cereals, refined sugar and all dairy products.
After three weeks on the plan which was devised by Swedish scientists, volunteers had lost an average of five pounds, with lower blood pressure and smaller waists as bonuses. In order to stop them going crazy and shouting “UG!” at every opportunity, the study’s leaders allowed them to eat a couple of potatoes each day and a portion of fatty meat once a week.
Interestingly, levels of a clotting agent in their blood (which is known to contribute towards heart attacks and strokes) had fallen dramatically.
Me want berries!
