Bigger wine glasses confuse drinkers’ alcohol limits

New, trendy, wine glasses that are big enough to fit your face inside - we’ve all supped some vino from one of those.
But the government is now worried that these new-fangled vessels are confusing people when it comes to safe alcohol limits.
The stats show that four out of five Brits didn’t know that a large glass of wine contains 3 whole units.
You’ve probably seen the new adverts on television this week showing how easy it is for ‘just one glass of wine’ to end up with you dangerously exceeding your weekly allowance of 21 units.
Well, these ads are part of the government’s new Know Your Limits campaign, in an aim to educate people on safe drinking.
Dawn Primarolo, a Public Health Minister, said:”Glass sizes have grown larger and the strength of many wines and beers has increased, so it’s no wonder some of us have lost track of our alcohol consumption.”
She’s probably right. The campaign focuses on women and young people in particular, who seem to take little notice of the warnings of binge drinking, who are more bothered about getting ratted than counting units.
However, the base message is clear - necking more than the advised limit leads to increased risk of serious illnesses.
Check out the NHS website to work out the units in your favourite tipple.
