Atkins is back – this time with bread and pasta

The much-maligned darling of the early noughties weight loss scene, the Atkins diet is going through a resurgence thanks to a new book.
The All-New Atkins Advantage Diet promises similar fast weight loss, but has fewer health concerns (apparently) and includes some portions of bread and pasta.
The principle is the same, where the body is forced into a state of ketosis (where fat is broken down to be used in lieu of carbohydrates) but more ‘good’ carbs are included in the four stages of the eating plan.
Hmn. A touch of the emperor’s new clothes methinks.
According to Marie Claire, seeds and berries are the only carbs allowed in the first two weeks of the diet, gradually more are introduced and then in the final stage white bread and pudding is allowed, to a limit of 120g per day (yum, weighing everything…)
Co-author, Dr Stuart Trager, says: “Yes, some foods are still off-limits in the earlier phases of the new diet. But there is room for healthy carbohydrates. The exercise plan means you can have a slice of bread with your salad if you do stick to the workouts.”

I’ve tried the previous version of Atkins. The diet really does produce some dramatic results and my energy levels ended up soaring after the first couple of days. But depriving myself of good carbs was unbearable in the long run. I’m curious about this newest version, though. Hmm …
